Also known as “brachioplasty,” arm lift surgery reshapes the upper arms to produce more slender and toned contours. Weight fluctuations and natural aging cause the arm skin to stretch and become loose, and fat deposits often accumulate in the upper arms as well. Over time, these conditions can cause arm flab to hang off the upper arms that oftentimes becomes bothersome to many patients.
The skin between upper elbows and armpits might get baggy and loose due to weight loss and/or ageing. In such cases, the operation performed to treat the baggy skin and to remove the excessive skin is called as arm lift.
Patients who suffer from baggy and loose skin between upper elbows and armpits due to weight gain and loss, and who experience loss of skin elasticity might undergo this procedure.
+90 546 776 9042As in all plastic surgeries, the patient should quit smoking minimum two weeks prior to the operation and should also avoid smoking for two weeks after the operation. Anticoagulant drugs, such as Aspirin etc. should be quitted minimum 10 days before the operation. The patient should discontinue any other medication or dietary supplement (medication that include Ginseng, CoQ, Gingko Bloba etc.) 1 week before the surgery. The patient should also disclose any other significant condition to their surgeon.
The surgery might be carried out under general or local anaesthesia. It takes 1 to 2 hours. An incision is made in the shape of a T or L starting from the armpit down to the elbow in order to remove the excessive skin or fat. The cuts are concealed in the inner side of the arms. In some cases, liposuction might be performed prior to operation.
Patients are usually released from the hospital on the operation day. They can have a bath on the second day. Patients are advised to wear corsets-like socks with suitable tightness for the first three weeks. Sports activities should be limited for the first six weeks. Patients should know that, at the end of this operation they will have permanent marks inside their arms which will become less visible in time. So prior to operation, the physician and the patient should decide whether the marks or the bagginess would cause more discomfort for the patient.
On the morning of your procedure, you will be picked up by your patient coordinator and transferred to the hospital where you will have a consultation your surgeon. He will assess your chest wall to determine the right implant shape and size for you. Afterwards, you will have medical tests to check your suitability for surgery and once confirmed the procedure will last around 1-2 hours. You will spend the night at the hospital following your surgery.– Day 1
You will be discharged from the hospital in the morning following a check-up by your surgeon. You will be transferred to your hotel where you will continue to rest.– Day 2
You are advised to continue resting, but once you start feeling better you can go out to explore the city on days 5 and 6.– Days 3, 4, 5 & 6
On your last day, you will have a final check-up by your surgeon and you will be ready to go home after receiving instructions on postoperative care. Stitches do not need to be removed as they will dissolve by themselves.– Day 7
Arm lift surgery lasts around 1,5-2 hours.
Arm lift surgery is performed under loca lor general anaesthesia.
The patient can return to work after 1 week.
The best candidates are those who are relatively close to their ideal body weight. Patients that have loose skin rather than just large arms will have better results, even though liposuction will be performed on all patients. Good candidates have realistic expectations, especially in regards to the permanent scars associated with the procedure.
You may be bruised, swollen, and sore following your arm lift. Your arms may be covered with compression garments to help reduce swelling and pain. Discomfort can be lessened with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication.
Most patients return to their day-to-day activities after one week. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for four to six weeks.
You will notice the full extent of your arm lift once the bruising and swelling subside—usually in a few weeks.
The results of an arm lift are generally permanent as long as the patient maintains a healthy lifestyle. This surgery does not prevent the aging process, and the arms will continue to age over time.
In some cases, the excess skin of the arm is continuous with excess skin of the lateral chest wall. In these cases, extension of the scar onto the chest under the armpit is needed to fully improve the upper body contour. When this is done, it is considered an extended brachioplasty or flankplasty. The scar is longer, but the improvement in the laxity of the side of the chest is usually well worth it.
